We are in the midst of a marathon! Covid-19 has put our lives on hold, changed the way we go about living, altered our relationships, and is not a sprint, but more of a marathon at this point. No worries though, there is a finish line and it will be epic!
All of these changes in our lives are showcasing stress at a whole new level. What does this mean? It means we need to find ways to deal with the unknown for an undetermined amount of time. There will be lessons.
Here are some strategies I hope you will find helpful in the coming months. Whether it's one or all of them, it's about coping and adapting to our new life as we know it, for now anyway.
Treat your body well! Get adequate sleep, rest, exercise and nutrition. 30 minutes of any kind of exercise 5 times a week is key. Ideally, right now is the perfect time to get outside, but whatever you do, get moving!! It sounds very cliche', right? Yes, but the reason it's so cliche' is that it's easy and accessible to almost everyone. Even if you exercise from a chair, 30 minutes is all it takes. Being at home means access to almost any kind of exercise imaginable online :). Take up that hobby you never had time for!
Find a way to help. Volunteer, Zoom on a committee, lend a hand, give to others that need you, share your GIFTS!! Turn your focus off yourself and into getting involved in a way that is HELPFUL!
Pray, meditate, or simply take time to be alone in thought. Settle yourself. Avoid the news addiction and just "be". This will help bring focus to your life and enable you to reach the finish line healthy and strong!
Avoid over indulgence of alcohol or food. This is a tough one but can be a game changer! Don't look for an escape, but rather focus on what you can control and engage your thoughts in that direction.
Stay connected. Find ways to connect socially or with family. Skype, Zoom, Face time, whatever it takes! Meet up virtually and cook dinners, practice yoga, share stories, jokes, sing, collaborate.
This marathon will end and we will all be stronger at that finish line together. It will take some effort, but that's what we do best! TOGETHER, we are stronger and resilient!!
